DIY Sunflower Pomander

Pomander or kissing balls are a popular wedding decor item.  What ever name you call them by, the flower bloom spheres are an easy item to decorate with.  DIY pomanders are fairly simple to create.  Three floral products, faux flowers, styrofoam balls and ribbon, keep materials to a minimum.

Making your own pomanders will allow you to customize flower and color choices to your wedding theme and also coordinate with bouquet flowers.  If you are already planning other DIY flower projects you can order your faux flowers in bushes instead of single stems or possibly get a discount on bulk purchases. Who doesn’t love saving a little money?

DIY Sunflower Pomander

Afloral.com’s sunflower pomander is a popular pin on pinterest, actually it is one of the most re-pinned pins from the afloral.com site.  Keeping in mind it’s ease and versatile lets take a look at how you can create your own sunflower pomander.

Materials:

Tip: By using the sunflower bush you are going to get the most for your money, it will be more affordable than buying individual stems for this project.

  1. Trim sunflower blooms off the sunflower bush, leaving about 3-4″ of the stem. Base this measurement off the diameter of the styrofoam ball you are going to insert them into.
  2. Insert blooms around the circumference of the styrofoam ball, keeping blooms close together until the entire surface around the ball is filled.
  3. Optional, add ribbon to be able to hang pomanders for decor.  Trim several inches of ribbon to create a loop then hot glue ends to the styrfoam ball, hiding the ribbon’s ends underneath the flower blooms.

Pomanders are versatile decor items.  The sunflower pomander would be perfect for any rustic, outdoor, country or barn weddings. Pomanders can substitute for bridesmaid bouquets or flower girl’s baskets coming in at a fraction of the cost for traditional flower arrangements.  To use them in ceremony decor, pomanders can be hassle free aisle or pew decorations.

Wedding reception decor ideas are endless with pomanders.  Centerpieces can incorporate the faux flower spheres from displaying them in vases to hanging them from branches.  Pomanders make simple and affordable chairbacks for the bridal party table.  And as seen in our afloral.com sunflower pomander photo, they can be hung as decor items to dress up any venue space.

Wedding Design Ideas: Create an Autumn Rose & Berry Kissing Ball

Summer is still in full swing, but Fall is just around the corner.  Busy brides are finishing up the last of their wedding details for their September, October or November weddings!  Sometimes decorating is the last step in the process.  We are going to help you with a quick and easy project that was submitted by one of our brides.  She was kind enough to send this photo as part of her wedding inspiration, so we decided to help her recreate it.

Autumn Rose & Berry Kissing Ball

You’ll need the following :

  • Orange Open Rose (20-25)Stems FSR168-AM
  • Orange Lily (3-5) Stems GTL386-OR
  • Red Berry Spray (4-6) Stems FSB456-RE
  • …and a few floral supplies & tools

  • 3 or 4″ Styrofoam Ball DAR-01006 or 01007
  • Chocolate Satin Ribbon GYR-142-9-33-BROWN
  • Greening Pins DAR-35740
  • Glue Gun FPC-H-270
  • Glue Sticks FPC-DT-20
  •

    Instructions:

Silk Florals & Supplies for Kissing Ball

  • Cut Silk Rose, Lily & Berry Stems to 1 1/2″ for 4″ Ball & 1″ for 3″ Styrofoam Ball.
  • Cut a 16″ strip of Satin Ribbon for top loop. You can adjust this measurement to meet your desired length to hang ball.
  • Cut 4″ strips (5-7) of ribbon for accents.
  • Find the middle of the top of the styrofoam ball  & mark the center. This is where your ribbon handle will be placed.
  • Take 16″ strip of ribbon fold in half  & cut a small slit in the center of loop.  Glue ribbon on either side of the slit to top center of ball.  Pin with greening pins for extra security. This will create a ribbon that can be tied.  If you want the loop at the top to hang, glue & pin the two ends.
  • Take your first rose, glue the bottom of the stem with a small bead of hot glue, & stick rose through center of slit in ribbon at the top of the ball. This will give the ribbon handle extra security.
  • Continue to insert roses leaving space for the lilies, berries & ribbon. There is no science to this process.  It is strictly your artistic floral vision.
  • Take Lilies & insert them using the same process as the roses. Continue with the berries.
  • To complete the look, fold 4′”strips of ribbon in half to make small loops,  hot glue ends, secure with greening pins & insert into styrofoam ball.
  • ** As with any project, be careful if using hot glue.  I always have a bowl/glass of ice water on hand for a quick dip if you get hot glue on your fingers!

    Erica writes:
“Hello, I’m getting married next October at my soon to be father-in-law’s house. We are getting married outside by the lake they own. We are having a causal wedding it is going be very small. I want to incorporate fall colors, my favorite flowers are gerbera daisies and sunflowers. My bridesmaids dresses are going be either black or brown, and the grooms men are going to wear shirts and ties and pants. I’m having a hard time coming up with some flower arrangement ideas. Please help me!!
    Thanks a lot, Erica”

Erica, I created your inspiration board with flowers in red, orange, and yellow — the perfect fall colors! I think the bouquets and wedding arrangements would look beautiful made up with yellow sunflowers, red roses, and orange gerbera daisies. For the bouquets, wrap a black (or brown) satin ribbon around the bouquet stems to complete the look. For the centerpieces, why not add in some curly willow for added height and more of that “fall” look. I hope this helps give you some ideas!

Dress from David’s Bridal. Items used to create Erica’s Fall Wedding Flower Inspiration Board from Afloral.com (clockwise starting at top left):

Premium Red Open Rose, Orange Open Rose, Natural Curly Willow, Yellow Sunflower Pomander Ball, Black Satin Ribbon, Yellow Gerbera Daisy, Orange Gerbera Daisy, Red Gerbera Daisy, Yellow Gold Sunflower.
