In the age of social media, weddings are the latest cultural institution to require optimization for social sharing. It makes sense. Weddings are a huge part of any couple’s experience. Why wouldn’t they want to share the day for their networks to see? In the past, friends would have to wait weeks for professional pictures or videos to be produced. Today, invited guests and others can immediately relive the moment or follow the proceedings in realtime. With a little help from the planners, your wedding can be a hit on social media for the world to see.

Start Planning Early. Popular venues with the best lighting, flower decor, and background for delicious social media shares are likely booked well in advance. Many brides begin planning 7 months to a year before the big day. To have your choice of venues that will best compliment the mood of your wedding day festivities, begin your search early – keeping your social media endgame in mind.

Select a Unique Hashtag. In order to have your wedding stand out on social media, select a hashtag that represents the new couple. Don’t spend a lot of time on this step. Pick something easy to remember, easy to share, and simple enough to distribute among your guest.

Share Your Hashtag. No one will use it if they don’t know what it is. Include your hashtag on save the date cards, post it on your wedding website, incorporate the hashtag into your decorations including a photo booth or your wedding favors. Encourage your guest to capture the moments from their perspective and share it with you and their networks on social media.

Delegate Social Media Duties. Enlist your bridesmaids and groomsmen in the social media strategy. Just in case your guest don’t receive the memo or aren’t social media savvy, let your wedding court know about your social optimization desires and set them loose. This will free you from focusing on this for the day and ensure that you social media sharing goals are me

Stay Off the Phone. Images of the bride and groom checking their phone will not make for great wedding photo fodder. Enjoy your day. Be in the moment. Stay off the phones and let your wedding court and guests (and your professional photographer) document your blissful day. Engage with your guests and your newly minted spouse. Keep your phones in your purse and pockets – unless you’re staging an ultimate selfie shot. Even then – make it quick and then move on.

Social media is an integral part of many of our lives. It stands to reason that pivotal experiences such as weddings would be lived before our social networks. As we continue to display meaningful events in our lives on full display, harnessing the power of social media to share and relive our special days is definitely trending. This simple tips will allow you to optimize your events for social media and make it easy for your guests to participate in this part of the day as well.
